Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy

What Is Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy:

Spastic Hemiplegic cerebral palsy means cerebral palsy affecting the upper and lower limb of one side of the body. A hemiplegic cerebral palsy is a form ofย spastic cerebral palsy. In hemiplegia cerebral palsy one side of the body is affected where the group of muscles on one side canโ€™t move.

In Spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy one side of the body is affected where a group of muscles on one side unable to move. This condition ofย cerebral palsyย occurs due to stroke. It includes muscles of the face, arms, and legs.

Types Ofย Spastic Hemiplegiaย

There are various types of Spastic Hemiplegia. For example Facial hemiplegia, cerebral hemiplegia, spastic hemiplegia, and spinal hemiplegia.

Facial hemiplegia defines as the paralysis where one side of the face is affected.

In cerebral hemiplegia, a brain lesion disrupts the flow of blood in the brain.

In Spastic hemiplegia one side of the body affected by the paralysis.

In spinal hemiplegia, lesions are formed on the spine. Stroke is the most common cause of hemiplegia.

Stroke is occurred due to some damage in the brain and interrupt in normal blood supply.

Perinatal strokes occur in infants after two to three days of birth and it causes a cerebral palsy condition in children. There are many limitations in cerebral palsy.

Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy Causes:

It is caused due to damage of motor area of one side of the brain. This is more common in birth hypoxia or anoxia. The left side of body involvement is more common

The Signs And Symptoms Of Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy:

Hemiplegic spastic cerebral palsy can be identified by the presence of less use of one side of the body, functionally weak one upper extremity mostly hands, deformity of one lower limb, delayed achievement of the developmental milestone, late start of walking, etc. Incidence of epilepsy and other associated medical problems are less common in this variety.

How Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy Can Be Diagnosed:

Diagnosis of hemiplegic spastic cerebral palsy is clinical. Diagnosis can be made by the above-given list of signs and symptoms. Mostly no other investigation is required. MRI can be done to diagnose the exact etiology of this problem.

Long Terms Outcomes And Care Of Spastic Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy:

Hemiplegic cerebral palsy has a good prognosis as compared to other forms of cerebral palsy. If correct physiotherapy is given at an early age most of the children become self-dependent and live normal lives.

Spastic Hemiplegiaย Treatment Options:

Nowadays we can make a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at an early age of 6 months to 1 year. Fromย the early age of 6months onward they need goodย physical therapy. Few children may need articulated AFO. Most of the time calf muscles are spastic so they need proper stretching of calf muscle and brace.

When spasticity is too much and not relieved with therapy then they needย botulinum toxin, plaster followed by therapy. Sometimes they have also been advised nighttime use of splints.

When a child develops fixed shortening of calf muscle then surgical intervention is required to lengthen the affected muscle. Sometimes foot deformity is also associated with a deformity in the knee and hip. This entire problem should also be managed in the same sitting.

CIMT, one of advance the therapeutic technique is being utilized for the treatment of the less functional upper limb, in which the normal upper limb is protected by the use of the splint and not allow to work with a normal hand for 4 hours a day.ย  Then different activities will be done by affected limbs at the same time.

As we know that the cerebral palsy treatment is not possible completely but management in the cerebral palsy condition is possible after some treatment. These treatments help CP patients to become independent. There some treatment commonly used for spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy given as below:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Oral Medications
  • Seizure medication
  • Splints to improve muscles movements
  • Braces for muscles imbalance
  • Orthopedic surgery to improve the functions
  • Sensory integration
